The Impressions of dy/dx

The importance of dy/dx can never be overlooked by a student of science. A student who opts for Science stream after appearing the 10th Grade exams gets into a new world of Subjects where Scoring in PCM (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics) can help you get a position at the top. For me it was dream come true, I thought this is what I was looking for and I am gonna give all others a tough time. I still remember the first class of 11th Science. We were excited to be a part of the brigade to which all other students looked up to. The class was good with individual chairs and flappable writing pads over it. We had some new class mates coming in from Hindi Medium of our school. A guy with specs came and sat on the chair next to me; he was very quiet and did nothing to get noticed but, he was not feeling comfortable for sure. I thought let me ask him and I said “Hi, I am Dibyendu are you from the Hindi medium”. He said “Yes I am but it’s difficult for me to understand, all the new terms in English”. I told him “No worries I’ll simultaneously what’s being said in plain Hindi is that fine with you”, he said “Yes”. Then he said “Thanks and I am Umakant”.

From that day onwards I and Umakant became the best buddies. We gelled well because he was silent and I was talkative and I like people who listen to me and give their intelligent responses. As the time passed by I realized that I was no matching to Uma’s intelligence his logical and analytical ability was very good. From him I learned that reading some topic is a different ball game than understanding the same topic. He gave me the right inputs to understand a topic and I gave him the right words to make notes in English. As both of us were tall we sat on the second last row and on the corner seats. The class was like and auditorium with chairs located at different levels.

The classes started first day was about filling forms and opting subjects, I opted out of Biology as I was not interested in this subject instead of that I opted for Hindi. 2nd day the teachers came in distributed the syllabus and the courseware which school used to provide us. The first formal class was of physics and entered our physics teacher Mr. Ashok Kumar singh. He was having a reputation of one of the most sincere teachers in the school. He came to the class and said “Boys and Girls before starting with the today’s class I would like to discuss with you about the differentials and the Integrals which will be a part of the Physics subjects right from the basic onwards”, then he took the chalk and wrote” dy/dx  is differentiation”. I was like “what’s this”. Then the whole session it made me feel as if he’s writing something in Greek.

He actually wrote all the basic formulas to be used for Integration and differentiation and what I understood was a big nothing. The feeling of not able to understand anything got on to me and I started sweating in the class, Uma looked at me and asked “Are you OK?”, I said “Yes, I am fine but I am not getting anything which he is writing on the board”. Uma said “Don’t worry bro even I am also not getting anything, we’ll find a way”. I replied to Uma “Look at those guys Sarvesh and Rupesh, they are cracking sums as if they knew these topics from ages”. As a matter of fact the answers for all the tough equations were always given to the teacher from our end of the class, but this time it was coming from the other end which made me feel not so good.

The class got over by that time I was under the influence of dy/dx. I was waiting to go home and put all my efforts to conquer my fear over dy/dx. I reached home and by that time the feeling got onto me so much that I broke down and told my mom “Mom I don’t think that I am fit for science stream”, my mom in utter surprise “Why son why do you think so?” . I said “In today’s class Singh Sir taught about differentiation and integration and I couldn’t get a hang of what he said and he has given us a set of question to work and get back to him with solutions by tomorrow”.

I had my food and was about to get into studying table because of the guilt I could not go out for my usual TT routine. The phone rang and mom called me “Sonu, call from Umakant for you”. I went to the call uma was calling from a local paid booth, I said “wait Uma give me the number and I’ll call you back”, before calling him back I came back with my Physics notebook and sat on the floor, I had confidence that uma would also be having his notebook with him. I called back and Uma asked “Bro!! did you get a chance to solve the sums, I have the notebook with me”, Bang!! As expected from Uma, I said “yes let’s do it together “. We spoke to each other for around 45 minutes and by that time we were done with 20 sums which were 10 more than asked by Singh Sir. At the end of the conversation uma told me “Let’s surprise Singh sir tomorrow, let him realize that bosses of integral and differential are from the same side of the class which was as silent as a desert today, Work hard and practice as many sums as you can”.

Next day when I reached school and uma came we could see that both of our eyes were red and I asked him “till what time man”, he responded “Till 3 AM, even you I could guess would be up till 2 AM at least”, “Yes” I replied. We gave each other a high five and moved into the class, to our surprise Singh Sir got a bad throat so he came to the class and asked if anybody could take over the class and solve some advance problems. To my surprise first time in the class Uma raised his hands and said “Sir I can but I need Dibyendu to explain the sums, as I may not be able to do this neatly in English”. It was a surprise and a bit of shock for other class mates as Uma had an impression of a guy who’s struggling with his choice of stream as he came from Hindi Medium School. We both took the class and the I wanted to tell to Uma “Welcome back bro!!”. Singh sir thanked us for the help and asked the class to clap for us. There were claps of appreciation from some of my friends and some claps of agony from my competitors.

I and uma started respecting each other and we share a mutual understanding till date which is around 10 yrs from that physics class.

The Gayatri Mantra and the Brahmin

When you are a kid then you are used to taking exams very seriously because if you don’t take them seriously then you loose face in the neighborhood. Wherever you go you find people staring at you as if each one of them has a Xerox copy of your report card. This feeling is even more gripping when your competitors are your dad’s colleague’s children. I still remember the bone chilling experience when my mom or my dad used to come back from office and we used to get marks for papers like Social Studies or Hindi, the two were the subjects which I was not interested in. I was thankful when I got an option after my 8th grade to leave Sanskrit as one of the subjects. I would like to tell you a small incident which made me hate Sanskrit even more, it was when I was in 8th grade the final year after which I thought I’ll get rid of this subject all my life (Although I am least entitled to say such things about Sanskrit because I am a Brahmin, I know I can see your eye brows getting curled in su

Minutes of Meeting with my Childhood...

Details of Turamdih: As they say “AAGAR FIRDAUS BAR RUYE ZAMINAST YO HAMINAST,YO HAMINAST, YO HAMINAST” , I think this quote in my life is not valid for Jammu and Kashmir, of all the places I have seen the place where I spent my child hood is a region with the largest mineral resources which people know as Chotanagpur Plateau. My dads being a Civil Engineer had to go places which were actually no man’s land and transform them into a great residential colony with all the amenities. Why my experience stands aloof from others is because I saw the colony rising from big Hills begin transformed into plain grounds and then a beautiful place to live for the Employees. As a kid we had a gang most of us are now in a corporate mess getting things out of our clients. A place which remains closest to my heart is Turamdih. At a distance of 7 km from Tata Nagar Railway station. When we landed there in 1990 and I was surprised to see a stretch of hills and was fantasized about exploring them. Since

Enrichment Process of my School Life

So now my previous post told people where I am from and the backdrop of the place where I spent my childhood days. The place was amazing no doubts about that, but since every coin has two sides the other side of the coin was that I formally landed into a colony life. Well to be precise a Colony in this blog would refer to a Place where people working under the same company stay. This would be a residential area. The unique thing about a colony is that “Everybody knows everything about everybody”, When I say the previous statement it holds good for everyone. People are more interested in other person’s life and this is also discussed over dinner and lunch. There are gossips all around and every move made by the child is monitored by everyone. To have a reputation built up in such a trying condition is indeed tough. Then there’s a competition with the friends around you. For me it was that if I secure 1st Rank in my class then my dad would buy me whatever I asked for after the results.
